An internship is an educational experience carried out at a public or private institution and is an opportunity to learn about the world of work through "on-the-job" experience. The internship can be compulsory curricular (i.e., provided for in the curriculum, with recognition of CFUs) or optional curricular, i.e., without recognition of CFUs.

A recent graduate's internship is called extra-curricular.
